Events Get Lit Book Club: Tony Birch, The White Girl

With Jo Trilling and Sisonke Msimang

Boffins Books is delighted to host Literature & Ideas curator Sisonke Msimang talking with Jo Trilling - the Host of The Culture Club, for the second Perth Festival Get Lit Book Club event where they discuss the finer points of Tony Birch's book The White Girl.

In The White Girl, Miles Franklin-shortlisted author Tony Birch shines a spotlight on the 1960s and the devastating government policy of taking Indigenous children from their families.

Odette Brown has lived her whole life on the fringes of a small country town.  After her daughter dissappeared and left her granddaughter Sissy to raise on her own, she stays under the radar of the welfare authorities who are removing fair-skinned Aboriginal children from their families.  When a new policeman arrives in town, determined to enforce the law, Odette must 'risk everything to save Sissy and protect everything she loves' (Goodreads).

We've chosen The White Girl because it's an important read that confronts history without every losing its grip on great storytelling.

Come along for a conversation with Sisonke and Jo.

'Birch is a writer with profound gift for language and human insight.  He writes with razor's edge emotional clarity and empathy about people and place - especially on those Australian margins, rural and urban.  The White Girl showcases his gift.'  Paul Daley. The Guardian.
