It's the night of the annual Autumn Equinox Festival, when the town gathers to float paper lanterns down the river. Legend has it that after drifting out of sight, they'll soar off to the Milky Way and turn into brilliant stars. This year, Ben and his classmates are determined to find out where those lanterns really go, and they made a pact with two simple rules: No one turns for home. No one looks back.
The plan is to follow the river on their bikes for as long as it takes to learn the truth, but it isn't long before the pact is broken by all except for Ben and (much to Ben's disappointment) Nathaniel, the one kid who just doesn't seem to fit in. Together, Nathaniel and Ben will travel down a winding road full of magic, wonder, and unexpected friendship.*
*And a talking bear.
Sas is a WAAPA graduate with 8 years experience in bookshops, specialising in Children's and Young Adult fiction. She reads fantasy when she gets the chance but you'll also find her curled up with classic literature and Silver Screen star biographies. She loves getting kids excited about new adventures and is so enthusiastic when giving recommendations that she sometimes gets tongue-tied.
SO FUN! What happens when you go further than you've ever gone before? Magic.
I loved everything about this! The limited colour palette, the shift into fantasy, the character that is so much like Eda Mode from The Incredibles. All of it!
Persistance is a huge theme in this, disguised cleverly by the amount of adventure the two boys get into (with a bear - you'll see).
This book encourages its readers to try what they haven't tried before, to leap head first into the unknown and to enjoy the experience along the way.
