Bill is one of the founders of Boffins and has been involved in selecting the books we stock since our beginning in 1989. His favourite reading is history, with psychology, current affairs, and business books coming close behind. His hobbies are reading, food, reading, drinking, reading, and sleeping.

When a fellow bookseller told me that her men’s book club voted this their favourite book so far this year, I thought I’d give it a go too. I’m so glad that I did. It’s one of those rare books that combines beautiful writing with the tension you expect from the best thrillers.

Capain John Lacroix survives the British defeat at Corunna in Spain by Napoleon’s forces in 1809 , and returns to England – wounded both physically and mentally. As he recovers and travels to the Scottish islands to forget the trauma, unknown to him he is being tracked by a very nasty English corporal and a Spanish officer. As a reader we see what is going on in the camps of both the hunter and the hunted, and the tension is excruciating. I read a lot of history, so if an historical novel gets the details wrong I usually pick that up and despair quite quickly. No chance of that with Andrew Miller. He’s totally in tune with the time and the places he writes about.

It’s a wonderful, suspenseful and compulsive book to read.
