The Other Side of the World is Stephanie’s second novel. The initial setting is Cambridge, England in 1963. Charlotte and her husband Henry and their children live in a dark and damp cottage and life is difficult. A brochure on life in Australia arrives and Henry persuades a reluctant Charlotte to move to Perth for a new and better life. Charlotte and to some extent, Henry, realise that moving hasn’t solved problems that had seeped into their relationship. Charlotte is torn between family and her own sense of belonging. The Other Side of the World is a beautifully written novel of family, identity and motherhood. I read the ending four times before I made up my mind on the family’s future and still think about my conclusion. I know other readers have had the same dilemma. A book to savour.
