It's always nice to have a new book from Robert Drewe, and lovely to see his first full length novel is some time. As he spent most of his childhood here in Perth and continues to write about our side of the continent, I think we can claim him as a West Australian.
Whipbird is set over one weekend in Kungadgee, Victoria, during a huge family reunion. As is the way when families get together, the wine and beer flows, tongues loosen, tempers fray and things can get just a teeny tiny bit out of control. Drewe has always been good at spotting pretentiousness in the real world and in Whipbird he slyly sends it up from all angles using his novelist's gaze.
